Work Ethic

I mock my parents a lot. It’s kind of hobby of mine. Some people collect stamps. I criticize my parents. While there are many legitimate reasons I should sue my parents, I do have to give credit where credit is due. My dad taught me a wonderful trick. It’s called “work ethic”.

A friend of mine was telling me about her coworker so I had to yell about it on here. Her coworker (let’s call her Bitchy McBitchbitch) had given her two week’s notice to leave. Instead of spend those two weeks earning her paycheck, she decided to spend it complaining the entire fucking time. All this did was put her coworkers in a bad mood, thus making more mistakes, thus making Princess McBitchbitch complain more.

When you are hired, you make an agreement. You will do certain tasks. For doing those tasks, you get a certain amount of money. If you don’t like the tasks you have to do, or don’t like the money you are being paid, you have no one to blame but yourself. YOU accepted the job on those terms. If you don’t like the situation, you are more than welcome to find another job. But while you are employed by that company, you are still bound by the agreement you made. You do the tasks you were hired to do, and get paid the amount agreed upon. It’s really fucking simple.

If you hate your job so much, quit. Why put yourself through working two weeks you hate? Oh yeah. You need money. People seem to think that their paycheck is “owed” to them. No. You earn it. By doing your fucking job. If you don’t do your job, YOU have broken the agreement, not your boss. They have no reason to pay you. It’s not like they should pay you just because you were kind enough to “grace” them with your presence and bitchy attitude.

One day, this chick will find a perfect job for her. Probably sucking cock for money. In the meantime, however, she has to work jobs she doesn’t like. Just like everyone else. On the plus side, SHE GETS PAID FOR IT. Just do your job, and collect your check. Then move on to your next job, where you make the same deal. You do certain tasks and get a certain amount of money. Hell, companies even give raises.  That means, you do the same work, but get paid MORE. Unless it’s a promotion, you don’t have to work more, and still get more money.

On a slightly different branch of this rant are the people that only do half of their jobs. This pisses me off because someone else has to make up the difference. Usually me. If you have to do a certain task. Let’s say a check in (since I work in hotels). This includes the expectation that you’ll do certain things as part of it. So you have to check their ID. You have to get a credit card. You have to get an address. When your job description says “do check ins”, it includes these details. It doesn’t mean you can do it your own way. They shouldn’t have to spell shit out for you. That’s what training is for.

All of this (doing your job correctly) just makes you an “average” employee. You show up. You do your job. You go home. There’s nothing wrong with this. I, however, wish people would do more. Go out of your way to help, without being asked. Do more than is expected of you. Sure it will make your boss happy, and your coworkers appreciate you, but more importantly, you become a better person for it. You become the person people want to be, instead of just another person. Your boss will show you off as a role model. Imagine if everyone had this attitude? What would happen if everyone showed up to work early? What if everyone did more than they had to? Not just in work, but in life? Think of how great it would feel if other people did it for you? All of a sudden you have a lighter load. It would be so wonderful if everyone did that for each other.

It’s all part of work ethic. If you’re going to do something, be the best at it. Don’t settle for mediocrity. Be the person you would love to hire, not someone you would hire if there was no one else. Make the world a better place, by being a better person.

My name is Chris. I currently live in Seattle, though I’m formerly from California. I'm a writer, comic, and superhero (allegedly). I complain. A lot. About everything. I also tell jokes.
